One of my favorite tourists attractions located in Pennsylvania, is the Kinzua Bridge. The bridge was built in 1882 and was called "The Eighth Wonder Of The World" during it's time. A tornado in 2003 collapsed most of the bridge. Prior to that time it's highest point was 301 feet, and 6 inches tall.
This was another location that I found searching online for a quick fun day trip. As you will soon see in the photos, the day that we chose to checkout the bridge, there was a strong storm moving in. What was not caught in the pictures is the sound of thunder and glimpses of lightning that became louder and more frequent while we were there. Kelly and I had to cut our visit short that day. Standing on a very tall steel bridge during a thunderstorm is probably a pretty unsafe place to be.
Though I didn't get very many pictures of it, there was a large newly finished visitors center with a large parking lot. Across from the visitors center is a tree covered picnicking area with tables and restrooms. There was also a food truck set up in the parking lot. After walking through the visitors center, we continued to the main attraction.
It is quite a sight to see. They have done a good job of making the bridge deck wide enough to accommodate a large number of people at once. With the approaching storm, we didn't have to deal with a large crowd.
At the far end of the bridge there is something for those who have no fear of heights. A few glass panels set in the floor that you can stand on.
There is also a hiking trail that crosses the valley below. If you look closely at the following pictures, you can just make out a few people walking below.
At about this time the storm was getting a little too close for comfort, so we made our way back to solid ground.
As we made our way back to the car, I realized just how bad my parking skills were that day. Surprisingly there were no notes on the windshield.
