Before I type anything about Freedom Falls or the Rockland Tunnel, I must first thank my cousin Danielle for making Kelly and I aware of this awesome hidden gem in Pennsylvania.
We made this trip twice in 2017. The first time we were unaware of the Rockland tunnel, it was only about a half mile away. Another reason that we made the trip twice, is because the location only about a hour south from our home.
The falls are approximately 100 yards from the road. You'll know that you're in the right spot when you come to a large bolder on the left side of the road. From there follow the well worn path to the falls.
If you travel approximately 50 yards downstream of the waterfall, you will find the Rockland Furnace.
Near the tunnel's entrance there is a pair of signs with information about the furnace and the tunnel.
If you decide to hike through the tunnel, make sure to take a flashlight. The tunnel is not straight and you will come to a spot towards the middle, where light cannot be seen from either end. Also on the day we went to the tunnel it was in the 70's and had recently rained. The tunnel's temperature was in the 50's and due to the humid air and temperature difference there was a thick layer of fog inside.
We definitely will be returning to visit these two sights soon. I am very interested in capturing higher quality images with my DSLR camera. All of the previous images were captured with our cellphones.
